多くの句動詞には、一語のよりかたい同義語があります:find out — discover、put off — postpone、carry on — continue。

Turn off the light. ✓ · Turn the light off. ✓ · Turn it off. ✓ · Turn off it. ✗
look after, deal with, get on(バスに乗る), come across がこのタイプです。
Look after the baby. ✓ · Look after her. ✓ · Look her after. ✗
小さな語がふたつ付くもの(run out of, come up with, look forward to, get on with)は分けません。
We ran out of time. · She came up with a plan. · I look forward to it.
up・out・off・down の意味の傾向
|---|---|---|
| up | 完了、増加、出現 | eat up, use up, speak up, turn up (the volume) |
| out | 最後まで、消える、見つけ出す | find out, run out, sell out, work out |
| off | 停止、離れる、中止 | turn off, take off, call off, set off |
| on | 開始、継続、身につけている | turn on, carry on, put on, go on |
| down | 減少、拒否、故障、書き留める | turn down, slow down, break down, write down |
| back | 戻る、返す | come back, call back, pay back, give back |
- Can you turn off it? ✗ → Can you turn it off?
- I look forward to see you. ✗ → I look forward to seeing you.
- She gave up to smoke. ✗ → She gave up smoking.
- Can you look after of the kids? ✗ → Can you look after the kids?
- We went out from the house at eight. ✗ → We left the house at eight. / We went out at eight.
ある場所を出たと言うときは leave か go out of を使います。
同じ場面でネイティブは put off, carry on, find out と言います。
「run out of = 切らす」より We've run out of milk
continue や postpone と言いそうになったら、carry on や put off を試します。
