Pertanyaan seperti Why do you think that is? atau Is that always true? bukan tanda jawabanmu salah — penguji sedang melihat apakah kamu bisa mengembangkan dan mempertahankan gagasan.
Struktur jawaban empat langkah
Struktur sederhana mencegahmu bertele-tele atau berhenti terlalu cepat. Ini bukan naskah, tapi arah:
- Jawaban: sampaikan pendapatmu di kalimat pertama.
- Alasan: jelaskan kenapa.
- Contoh: buat jadi konkret — negaramu, situasi yang umum, sesuatu yang pernah kamu lihat.
- Penyeimbang atau akibat: tambahkan sisi lain, sebuah syarat (it depends on…), atau akibatnya.
Begini kedengarannya untuk pertanyaan Do you think people read less than they used to?
(Answer) I'd say people read just as much, but they read differently. (Reason) Most of what we read now is short — messages, posts, headlines — so the habit of concentrating on one long text is what's really declining. (Example) In my country you see people reading on their phones on every bus, but very few with an actual book. (Balance) That said, audiobooks have brought a lot of people back to longer stories, so it's not all bad news.
Sekitar 75 kata, kira-kira 30 detik saat diucapkan: cukup panjang untuk menunjukkan keragaman, cukup pendek agar percakapan tetap mengalir.
Enam jenis pertanyaan dan cara menghadapinya
| Jenis | Contoh | Cara menghadapinya |
|---|---|---|
| Pendapat | Should governments fund the arts? | Ambil posisi yang jelas, lalu tunjukkan bahwa kamu melihat sisi lainnya: I think so, although… |
| Dulu dan sekarang | How has tourism changed your country? | Bandingkan tenses: used to / now, has become. Sebutkan satu perubahan konkret. |
| Masa depan | How will cities change in the next fifty years? | Berspekulasi dengan will probably, might, I imagine — tidak perlu yakin. |
| Sebab-akibat | Why do people find change difficult? | Sebutkan dua sebab, bukan satu, lalu hubungkan: partly because… and partly because… |
| Kelebihan dan kekurangan | Is it better to rent or to own things? | Satu sisi, lalu sisi lain, lalu kesimpulanmu: on balance… |
| Solusi | How can cities reduce overcrowding?
- Menyampaikan pendapat: I'd say…, As far as I can tell…, I'm fairly convinced that…
- Melunakkan: To some extent…, It depends on…, That's not always the case.
- Menggeneralisasi: On the whole…, Generally speaking…, In most cases…
- Memberi contoh: Take… for instance., A good example is…
- Membandingkan dulu dan sekarang: Compared with my parents' generation…, These days, whereas in the past…
- Berspekulasi: I imagine…, It's likely that…, I wouldn't be surprised if…
- Mengulur waktu dengan wajar: That's an interesting question — I haven't thought about it much, but…
Pakai satu atau dua per jawaban, bukan lima. Penguji menghargai bahasa yang pas, bukan daftar kata penghubung.
Kesalahan yang mengurangi nilai
- Bercerita tentang diri sendiri. Why do people enjoy travelling? bertanya tentang orang pada umumnya; cerita pribadi bisa jadi contoh, bukan seluruh jawaban.
- Berhenti setelah satu kalimat.
Hanya bilang Both have advantages itu menghindar. Timbang lalu simpulkan.
- Jawaban hafalan.
Mengatakan I've never really thought about that, but… lalu berpikir dengan bersuara jauh lebih baik daripada diam lama.

Berapa lama IELTS Speaking Part 3?
Sekitar empat sampai lima menit.
Bolehkah bilang "I don't know" di Part 3?
Boleh, tapi lanjutkan dengan berpikir: "I've never really thought about it, but I suppose…" mengubah kekosongan menjadi jawaban yang lancar. "I don't know" saja tidak memberi penguji apa pun untuk dinilai.
