अंग्रेज़ी idioms: वे 40 जो native speakers सच में बोलते हैं

"I'm a bit under the weather" का हर शब्द आप जानते हैं, फिर भी मतलब समझ नहीं आता — यही idiom (मुहावरा) है।

Cost an arm and a leg हाथ-पैर की बात नहीं करता: इसका मतलब है बहुत ज़्यादा महँगा होना। बिल्कुल वैसे ही जैसे हिंदी में "नाक कटना" या "उल्लू बनाना"।

Idioms और phrasal verbs (give up, find out) एक चीज़ नहीं हैं, भले ही दोनों कई शब्दों से बने हों। ये कहावतें भी नहीं हैं: कहावत अपने आप में पूरी सीख होती है (Don't put all your eggs in one basket, "सारे अंडे एक टोकरी में मत रखो"), जबकि idiom वह अभिव्यक्ति है जिसे आप अपने वाक्य में फिट करते हैं।

English idioms

It's raining cats and dogs.सबसे मशहूर English idiom, और इसे गंभीरता से लगभग कोई नहीं बोलता। सुनाई दे तो ज़्यादातर मज़ाक़ में।It's pouring. / It's pouring down.
She's the bee's knees.बहुत पुराना (1920 के दशक का slang)। मज़ाक़ के लिए ठीक, आम बातचीत में अजीब।She's amazing. / She's brilliant.
I'm as fit as a fiddle.समझ में आता है पर पुराना है; ज़्यादातर बुज़ुर्ग बोलते हैं।I feel great. / I'm in great shape.
A penny for your thoughts?शिष्ट लेकिन पुराने ज़माने का; आज नाटकीय लगता है।What are you thinking about?

अच्छी ख़बर: ऊपर की सूची के ज़्यादातर idioms — a piece of cake, break the ice, on the same page, call it a day — आज भी ख़ूब चलते हैं।

a piece of cake ✓ · a slice of cake ✗ · a piece of a cake ✗

Verb सामान्य तरह से बदलता है

Idiom के अंदर का verb सामान्य grammar मानता है: tense, -ing रूप, negative और question सब हमेशा की तरह।

Let's break the ice. · He broke the ice with a joke. · Breaking the ice is the hardest part.

Pronoun और possessive बदलते हैं

अगर idiom में someone या your है, तो सही व्यक्ति डालें: pull someone's leg → pulling my leg, pull your weight → pull their weight।

You're pulling my leg. · I was only pulling his leg. · Everyone has to pull their weight.

Idioms अनौपचारिक होते हैं

इन्हें बातचीत, मैसेज और सहकर्मियों को भेजे जाने वाले हल्के-फुल्के ईमेल में इस्तेमाल करें। Academic essay, रिपोर्ट और औपचारिक पत्र में सीधा-सादा शब्द बेहतर है।

This task is a piece of cake. (chat, message) · This task is straightforward. (report, essay)

एक नियम और: idioms की झड़ी मत लगाइए। तीन idioms वाला वाक्य ("It was a piece of cake, so I was on cloud nine and called it a day") किताब की exercise जैसा लगता है। कुछ मिनट की बातचीत में एक idiom बिल्कुल सही है।

आम गलतियाँ

  • The exam was a piece of a cake. ✗ → The exam was a piece of cake.
    cake से पहले article नहीं आता: तय रूप है a piece of cake। कई लोग उल्टा पहला a भी छोड़ देते हैं — It's piece of cake ✗।
  • It cost an arm and leg. ✗ → It cost an arm and a leg.
    दूसरा a भी idiom का हिस्सा है: an arm and a leg।
  • Don't worry, he's pulling your legs. ✗ → Don't worry, he's pulling your leg.
    हमेशा एकवचन — चाहे कितना भी मज़ाक़ करें, someone's leg ही बोलेंगे। हिंदी में "टाँग खींचना" भी एकवचन है, यह याद रखने में मदद करेगा।
  • I killed two birds with a stone. ✗ → I killed two birds with one stone.
    तय रूप है one stone; a stone अनुवाद जैसा लगता है।
  • We are all in the same ship. ✗ → We are all in the same boat.

· in the same boat = एक ही नाव में सवार · better late than never = देर आए दुरुस्त आए · kill two birds with one stone = एक तीर से दो शिकार (अंग्रेज़ी में तीर नहीं, पत्थर) · the ball is in your court = गेंद अब आपके पाले में है।
  • बात वही, तस्वीर अलग: a piece of cake = बाएँ हाथ का खेल · once in a blue moon = ईद का चाँद होना (हिंदी में यह ज़्यादातर किसी व्यक्ति के लिए बोला जाता है) · beat around the bush = बात घुमाना · let the cat out of the bag = राज़ खोल देना · a blessing in disguise = जो होता है अच्छे के लिए होता है · it's raining cats and dogs = मूसलाधार बारिश।
  • हिंदी से शब्दशः अनुवाद के जाल: "नाक कटना" → my nose got cut ✗, सही है lose face। "उल्लू बनाना" → make an owl ✗, सही है make a fool of someone। "अपने मुँह मियाँ मिट्ठू बनना" → blow your own trumpet। "आँख का तारा" का सुंदर अंग्रेज़ी रूप है the apple of my eye — आँख वही, बस तारे की जगह सेब। "नौ दो ग्यारह होना" → make a run for it।
  • ग़लतफ़हमी से बचें: break a leg कोई बद्दुआ नहीं, बल्कि स्टेज पर जाने वाले को "all the best" कहने का तरीक़ा है।

Idioms ऐसे सीखें कि याद रहें

  1. पहले तस्वीर, फिर अर्थ। कल्पना कीजिए कि आप दो लोगों के बीच बर्फ़ की एक पतली परत सच में तोड़ रहे हैं। Idioms तस्वीरें हैं; वही तस्वीर उन्हें याद रखवाती है।
  2. हमेशा उदाहरण वाक्य के साथ। "That phone cost an arm and a leg" याद रहता है; "arm and a leg = महँगा" नहीं।

Idiom kya hota hai? (अंग्रेज़ी में idiom क्या है?)

Idiom एक तय अभिव्यक्ति है जिसका मतलब उसके अलग-अलग शब्दों से अंदाज़ा नहीं लगाया जा सकता। जैसे "break the ice" का मतलब है पहली मुलाक़ात की झिझक दूर करना, और "once in a blue moon" का मतलब है बहुत कम, कभी-कभार।

Phrasal verb एक verb और up, out या off जैसे छोटे शब्द का मेल है (give up, find out)। Idiom कोई भी तय वाक्यांश है जिसका अर्थ शाब्दिक नहीं होता (a piece of cake, break the ice)। कुछ phrasal verbs मुहावरेदार होते हैं, पर ज़्यादातर idioms phrasal verbs नहीं होते।

क्या आप इसे बोलकर अभ्यास करना चाहते हैं?
