- Lý do: giải thích vì sao.
- Ví dụ: làm cho cụ thể — đất nước bạn, một tình huống thường gặp, điều bạn từng thấy.
- Cân bằng hoặc kết quả: thêm mặt còn lại, một điều kiện (it depends on…) hoặc một hệ quả.
Với câu Do you think people read less than they used to?, câu trả lời sẽ như sau:
(Answer) I'd say people read just as much, but they read differently. (Reason) Most of what we read now is short — messages, posts, headlines — so the habit of concentrating on one long text is what's really declining. (Example) In my country you see people reading on their phones on every bus, but very few with an actual book. (Balance) That said, audiobooks have brought a lot of people back to longer stories, so it's not all bad news.
Khoảng 75 từ, nói mất chừng 30 giây: đủ dài để thể hiện sự đa dạng, đủ ngắn để cuộc trò chuyện tiếp tục.
Sáu dạng câu hỏi và cách xử lý
| Dạng câu hỏi | Ví dụ | Cách xử lý |
|---|---|---|
| Ý kiến | Should governments fund the arts? | Chọn rõ một phía, rồi cho thấy bạn hiểu phía còn lại: I think so, although… |
| Quá khứ và hiện tại | How has tourism changed your country? | Đối chiếu thì: used to / now, has become. Nêu một thay đổi cụ thể. |
| Tương lai | How will cities change in the next fifty years? | Dự đoán với will probably, might, I imagine — không cần chắc chắn. |
| Nguyên nhân – kết quả | Why do people find change difficult? | Đưa hai nguyên nhân thay vì một và nối chúng: partly because… and partly because… |
| Ưu và nhược điểm | Is it better to rent or to own things? | Một mặt, rồi mặt kia, rồi kết luận: on balance… |
| Giải pháp | How can cities reduce overcrowding? | Đề xuất hai ba biện pháp và nói biện pháp nào quan trọng nhất. |
- Nêu quan điểm: I'd say…, As far as I can tell…, I'm fairly convinced that…
- Làm mềm ý: To some extent…, It depends on…, That's not always the case.
- Khái quát: On the whole…, Generally speaking…, In most cases…
- Đưa ví dụ: Take… for instance., A good example is…
- So sánh quá khứ và hiện tại: Compared with my parents' generation…, These days, whereas in the past…
- Dự đoán: I imagine…, It's likely that…, I wouldn't be surprised if…
- Câu giờ một cách tự nhiên: That's an interesting question — I haven't thought about it much, but…
Chỉ nói Both have advantages là né tránh.
Nói I've never really thought about that, but… rồi suy nghĩ thành tiếng tốt hơn nhiều so với một khoảng lặng dài.

Được, nhưng hãy tiếp tục lập luận: "I've never really thought about it, but I suppose…" biến chỗ trống thành một câu trả lời trôi chảy. Chỉ nói "I don't know" thì giám khảo không có gì để đánh giá.
