Approximate equivalents

Choose a test and enter your score.

Concordance tables are approximate: they show which scores similar test takers achieved, not that the tests are interchangeable. Always check the exact requirement of your university or visa programme.

How the conversion works

The organisations behind TOEFL, PTE and the Duolingo English Test have each studied thousands of people who took their test and IELTS Academic within a few months of each other. From those results they publish concordance tables showing which score on their test corresponds to each IELTS band. This converter uses the most recent official table for each test and works through the IELTS band, so converting TOEFL to PTE, for example, takes two steps.

That is why some results appear as a range: a TOEFL 6, for instance, covers IELTS 8.0 to 9.0.

Official comparison table

Each row shows an IELTS Academic overall band and the scores the test makers align with it.

Below IELTS 4.5 there is too little data for a reliable comparison.

TOEFL's new 1–6 scale

Since 21 January 2026, TOEFL iBT has reported scores on a 1–6 scale in half-point steps, aligned to the CEFR levels A1 to C2. Until January 2028, score reports also show a comparable score on the old 0–120 scale, because many universities still state their requirements that way. If a university asks for TOEFL 90, that is 4.5 on the new scale (86–94).

Which test suits you?

First check which tests your university, employer or visa programme accepts, and the minimum for each skill, not just the overall score. After that, the format matters more than the numbers:

  • IELTS: the Speaking test is a live conversation with an examiner.
  • TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic: you speak to a computer and your answers are recorded and scored.
  • Duolingo English Test: about an hour, taken online at home.

If you speak more naturally to a person than to a microphone, IELTS may suit you better; if a live examiner makes you nervous, the computer-based tests may feel easier.
